Precipitate produced by Serratia marcescens on MacConkey agar: useful diagnostic test.
نویسنده
چکیده
The production of a precipitate by Serratia marcescens on Oxoid MacConkey agar has proven useful as a laboratory diagnostic test. This phenomenon is specific for Serratia within the Enterobacteriaceae, although precipitate production is also given by Acinetobacter anitratus and some Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, and Aeromonas species. Precipitate production seems to be specific for certain batches of MacConkey agar, and is probably related to a specific property of some batches of bile salts.

Evaluation of three methods using deoxyribonuclease production as a screening test for Serratia marcescens.
Deoxyribonuclease (DNase) produced by Serratia marcescens is a characteristic feature which is useful in distinguishing this organism from closely related members of the Enterobacteriaceae. In an assessment of three methods of performing the DNase test as a screening procedure for Serratia marcescens, the conclusion was reached that the standard test was most suitable for use in the clinical ba...

Among the facultative bacteria capable of growth on mesquite wood which were isolated from the asceptically dissected hind-gut of the termite Reticulitermes hesperus were two strains of Bacillus cereus, one strain each of Arthrobacter, Alcaligenes and Serratia, and a very small Gram-negative fermentative rod. The B. cereus strains, the Serratia marcescens strain and the Arthrobacter sp. grew we...
متن کاملInfluence of Growth Media and Temperature on Bacterial Adhesion to Polystyrene Surfaces
Bacterial adhesion to inert surfaces is a complex process influenced by environmental conditions. In this work, the influence of growth medium and temperature on the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes to polystyrene surfaces was studied. Most bacteria demonstrated the highest adhesion when cultured in TSY...
متن کاملAntibiotic resistance patterns of clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens.
Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 102 clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens from three medical centers were studied by using disk sensitivity and agar dilution methods. The least resistance was demonstrated against gentamicin, nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol, and sulfisoxazole, all of which inhibited more than 80% of the strains. Cephalothin was completely ineffective, and more than 9...
متن کاملAbortive infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens with coliphage P1.
In the course of attempts to effect intergeneric transduction by means of coliphage P1 (Bertani, J. Bacteriol. 62:293, 1951; Lennox, Virology 1:190, 1955), we observed that this phage can attack and kill many strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens. Bacterial killing is not accompanied by phage multiplication. Lysates of phage Plkc or its mutant Plkc vir, grown on either Shige...
